making the most of your tan

Before Tanning
Exfoliate your body before the application. This is easily accomplished by rubbing a damp soapy face towel firmly over your skin when showering. Pay attention to rough skin areas like knees, elbows, ankles and the tops of your feet.

Body Prep - Moisturizer - Make-up
Do not apply any oil based products to your skin. We also recommend that you don't wear any make-up, deodorant, or perfume. Please shave prior to your tan. Wear attire suitable for tanning: we suggest a bikini for women and dark shorts or a swimsuit for men.

Dark loose fitting attire is ideal. Dark clothing will not stain if a bit of the bronzer rubs off, and loose clothing is less likely to rub off the initial bronzer while your tan is developing.

After Tanning
Once your tan is applied, you must allow it to dry completely. We will ensure that your application is dry before you leave, but as a precaution, do not wet your skin for at least 4-6 hours after the tanning session. Showering the following morning is the best option.

Avoid Exercise
We also recommend that you do not exercise or perspire excessively between the tanning and the showering phase. When showering don't be concerned if some of the initial bronzer washes off - this is part of the sunless tanning process, and your skin will continue to tan.

Other considerations in maintaining your tan are to avoid long baths, hot spas and extended swimming sessions. Shorter sessions are preferable. Also avoid products designed to exfoliate your skin.

Important Information
If you feel you have highly sensitive skin, or you have any doubts, we recommend a small localized test spray to check your skin compatibility before having your full body spray.

We recommend that you wear dark, loose fitting attire after your appointment. Any minor rub-off will easily wash out of most fabrics, but some lighter colored materials, including leather, may stain.

Spray-on tanning does not provide any sun protection and it does not contain a sunscreen. Please make sure you apply sunscreen to prevent sunburn when outdoors.

Letís face it. A nice tan makes you look and feel great.
Plus, it can hide ugly cellulite and also make you appear thinner. If you are going on a trip or you simply want to look good for an event thatís coming up, itís important to establish a base tan so that you avoid getting scorched by the sun.

When it comes to tanning, every personís skin type is different and results will vary. Consult with your local tanning salon for a skin type analysis (from a Smart Tan Certified Tanning Consultant) so you can get a good idea of where to start. And if you are very sensitive to the sun or donít want any UV at all, you can try the latest UV-Free tanning alternatives.

10 Indoor Tanning Tips
1. Be careful if you are on any prescription medications.

Blood pressure medications, antibiotics, and skin problem medications are just a few categories of drugs you preferably should not be taking if you are tanning or spending lots of time outdoors. Refer to the photosensitizing medication chart in your local tanning salon to be sure the medications you are taking are not listed. These medications can affect the results of your tanning, making it more difficult to tan and you are more prone to burning.

2. Always use a good quality indoor tanning lotion.

It will help your skin to absorb the UV, which will aid in the tanning process. There are also special ingredients that stimulate melanin production, such as Tyrosine, which will give you the most out of every tanning session. Itís best to apply indoor tanning lotion immediately prior to your session or 1-2 hours prior is even better if you can. Applying it ahead of time allows your skin to absorb the lotion better so you will get the best results from your tanning session.

3. Apply after tan lotion as well to take care of your skin and keep it moisturized.

Apply it twice daily at a minimum to keep your skin happy, once in the morning and again at night before bed. This also can enhance your tan and make it longer lasting- the key to a great tan is healthy skin!

4. If you are just beginning to tan, remember to start out conservatively.

Whatever you do, you donít want to burn- you cannot tan on top of a burn and you will have to start over. The old saying ďI always burn first and then I tanĒ is completely false; it simply does not have to be this way. If you burn, your skin is telling you that itís getting too much sun, and then you will peel. So start out with a low number of minutes and work your way up. If you have fair skin but do have the ability to tan, you should not go more than 6-7 minutes your first time in a standard 20 minute tanning beds (also known as a Level 1 tanning bed). For stronger beds with shorter tan times, you would go for even less minutes.

5. Go once every 24-48 hours to build your base.

Depending on how well your skin is doing, you can decide whether you can go once a day or once every other day. A good rule of thumb is if your skin is not pink within the 24 hours after your session, you can probably go again the next day without any problem. If your skin is pink, feels dry and itchy, or you get a rash, this is a signal that you went for too many minutes and need to take a break until it feels better and then start over again.

6. Once you build up your base, you really donít need to tan as often.

So depending on the type of bed you are using, you should only go 2-3 times per week to keep your tan, even less in stronger beds. This is where I see many people go overboard, tanning every day when it is really not necessary. Many people enjoy the relaxation time that tanning provides, but tanning too often can and will speed up your aging process and potentially cause other skin ailments over a long period of time. Just like everything else in life, moderation is key!

7. Wear eye protection (goggles) at all times!

Many people think that putting a towel over their face will block the UV rays, but it doesnít and repeated UV exposure can cause major eye problems later in life. Would you rather be blind or have lighter eyelids? I think I would choose the latter, but that is just me. For your own safety, please wear the eye goggles!

8. Protect sensative areas that get little sun exposure.

If you want to tan all over, use a towel to cover those ďsensitiveĒ areas that donít see the sun very often. In the beginning, try covering those areas for half the session and see how it goes. Gradually you can remove the towel earlier and earlier until you donít need to use one anymore. The towel acts as a filter but wonít completely block the UV rays, so you are still getting the tanning process started.

9. Move to avoid getting creases or pressure tanning lines.

To avoid creases and lines, move your limbs into different positions during your session. For the first half, try lying down with both arms extended above your head and legs apart. For the second half, bring your arms down next to your sides but away from your body, and re-position your legs by raising one knee slightly for a half of the remaining time, and then the other leg do the same thing.

10. Avoid unexpected reactions.

Avoid wearing make-up, deodorant, or other perfumes prior to tanning. Some of these things can make your skin more sensitive and possibly have a bad reaction with your skin when exposed to UV. If you wear a lot of deodorant, you may notice that you are not tanning as well around your armpits, and you need to remove this prior to tanning.

1. Speed Up That Tan
  • Yeah we know, this is something that almost every tanner understands when it comes to tanning lotions, but did you know tanning happens up to 60% faster than someone who doesnít use tanning lotion at all? We donít know about you, but that is much faster than we could have ever thought. With the use of heavy bronzers and tingle lotions that percentage can go up even more! Do not forget though, that as you bump up on the bronzers and tingle action that you do not want to skimp on the lotion due to price. The problem with going cheaper when looking for max color is that quality tends to suffer in order to get the price so low. Better to look good than to look like the shade of color that we never wish to speak of.
2. Moisturizing is always key!
  • Letís face it, tanning whether it is outdoors or indoors is going to dry out your skin. The problem with this of course is that dry skin is harder to tan and can actually reflect up to 75% of the UV from taking effect. Besides slowing down the rate at which you tan, dry skin also makes skin look dull, old and just unhealthy. Using tanning lotion will not only help speed up the tanning process but keeps skin hydrated for the best natural results without the risk of your skin looking like itís dead.
3. Helps prevent burning
  • No tanning lotion on the market will EVER fully prevent you from burning. Please do not think that just because you are using tanning lotion that you can bump up to the full time right away. Tanning should always be gradual and done in moderation. It will however help in the prevention of burning because of the hydration factor. Dry skin is actually the number one reason for burning while tanning. Using tanning lotion will eliminate this problem and help in the reduction of burning. Just remember, it is not a race and should be done safely.
4. Give back what tanning takes away
  • Anytime you talk tanning you are bound to hear a person talk about how tanning is going to give you wrinkles and premature aging. These people of course do not know that tanning lotions of today are designed to fight this. *Exercise increases blood circulation and oxygen levels in your skin. Exercise is the all natural way to get the same results you would from using a tingle lotion.

*Moisture is critical to good skin health. It helps replenish and retain the normal moisture content of the stratum corneum keeping the skin soft and supple. Moisturizing helps create a flexible, pliable skin that is soft to touch. Moist skin is healthy skin and will tan better and more evenly than dry skin. Moist skin will allow ultraviolet light to penetrate the skin while dry skin reflects 50% of UV light.

*Drink plenty of water for deep tissue skin hydration. 6-8 cups a day is recommended by doctors for general overall health.

*If you are taking any photosensitive medications you might have a reaction to ultraviolet light. Please consult a physician or pharmacist before tanning.

*Ultraviolet light can damage the eyes, causing serious side effects over time. When tanning indoors, you should always wear the FDA approved goggles provided for you.

*Should you tan nude, please pay extra attention to those areas not accustomed to sunlight. For the first few sessions, these areas should be covered for a portion of the session in order to acquire a base tan slowly and prevent burning.

*Lips have no melanin and will never develop a tan. They can dry out in the sun or in tanning beds. Be sure to keep them moist with lip balm.

*Please do not use any outdoor tanning lotions or oil in our tanning beds as they will damage the acrylics.
